    I think the Ice King has possibly the most tormented, torturing and sad past of any cartoon character from a children's show, and probably has the most character development and humanity (well, earlier on).

    And then the directors decide that he'll be the butt-monkey for the show, despite his painful, lonely journey, showing just how dark their humour is. :P

    So the Ice King was a human before the Great Mushroom War, so he and Marceline must be around the same age, since Marceline was a child during or shortly after the war took place, and that was when she didn't have any bite marks. They have to make an epic episode explaining all of this epicness within the show.
